South-west of St. James Church, on the way to the Kovačica cemetery, a tall bronze figure of Christ rises from the ground with his arms stretched wide. It is the work of the Slovenian sculptor Andrej Ajdič and was placed here for Easter 1998.
The statue shows the crucified and risen Lord in one figure: the arms are still open as on the cross, but the body is already rising. Pilgrims stand in line to touch it and pray, at every hour of the day.
The statue was set up for Easter 1998. For Easter 2002 the space around it was arranged with Stations of the Cross, so that those who are unable to climb Cross Mountain can pray the Way of the Cross here, alone or in a group.
Pilgrims have long noticed drops of liquid forming on the right knee of the statue. Many wipe them with a small cloth and take it home to someone who is ill. The Church has made no pronouncement on the phenomenon; for pilgrims it is simply an invitation to prayer and trust.
Take time to walk around the statue and look at it from every side before you pray.
A circle of stations around the statue offers a level, accessible Way of the Cross.
The path from the church towards the statue is lined with the luminous mysteries of the Rosary.
Close by is the prayer area where pilgrims light candles for their intentions.
